Carol Garvin Captivated by the allure of the tropics, Garvin creates watercolors awash with sunlight and rich color, depicting secluded lagoons, quaint cottages and rustling palms. Having traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and Bahamas, she now resides in Coconut Grove, Florida. Her vintage home, warmed by sunlight and cooled by bay breezes provides and ideal setting for the creation of her enchanting watercolors. Before making art her career, she worked with a biologist doing environmental impact studies. “Going out on field trips, we would survey and collect vegetation samples. Later, these specimens would be identified and I would produce detailed illustrations of our finds.” The knowledge gained from this experience has proven invaluable in her art career. Her interest in history has been equally rewarding. The graceful but practical architectural designs provide charming subjects for her watercolors of the Caribbean. In addition to being creative, Garvin is civic-minded. In her 10-year career as a professional artist she has created posters benefiting hurricane relief, environmental education, history and the arts. She worked with a high school art club creating a lobby mural for Dade County Animal Services which adopts out unwanted pets. The Florida Department of Natural Resources uses her art on colorful signs posted at roadside boat ramps to educate people about the wildlife found in aquatic preserves located in the Florida Keys. In 1995 and 1996 her work was used as an incentive to obtain memberships for National Public Radio. Her work is on permanent exhibit in the Cayman Islands National Museum on Grand Cayman. She was the youngest artist ever nominated to the Florida Artist’s Hall of Fame. She wrote and illustrated a cookbook, Tropical Tastes and Tantalizing Tales. Unlike most cookbooks, this one should be read cover to cover. Whether you’re adventuresome enough to try frying gator tail or simply enjoy some lighthearted prose, this book is guaranteed to entertain. Her tropical motifs can be found decorating hotels throughout the Caribbean and Florida, on book and magazine covers, telephone directories, airline timetables and maps. Her work may be seen in fine gift shops and galleries throughout Florida, and the Caribbean.
