Marsha Hammel

Born in Florida, Marsha Hammel has lived in Panama, Italy, Germany, Canada, and in several cities throughout the United States. She has been particularly inspired by periods she spent in Miami, New Orleans, and Quebec, where the vibrant cultures have combined two favorite: music and the figure.

Marsha Hammel’s talent was recognized early, when at the age of sixteen she was selected to attend the Governor’s School for Gifted Students in North Carolina. Here Marsha taught a Classical and European approach to art, and in spite of being told later at Virginia Commonwealth University that contemporary artists should produce conceptual or abstract pieces, a classical idea governs her work.

During the 1970’s, Marsha worked almost exclusively on paper with pastels or oil paint. This technique allows great spontaneity and, filling literally hundreds of sketch books, she developed her skill as a draftsman. She says “My goal was to create painted form with the impact of line; that is, that the form is the line, that every mark is a drawing. This concern for the integrated brushstroke is still a foundation of my painting.”

In 1980 she established a studio in Florida, and starting working on canvas. The intense light and color of the sub-tropics became a powerful element in her work and her paintings became dominated by vibrant color. In 1987, Marsha decided that color was taking over her compositions and so put herself on a color diet. She limited her palette to earth pigments; black, white, ultramarine, alizarin, crimson, and cadmium yellow medium. Since then, color has gradually returned, but this palette is still the basis for her work today.

Marsha now lives in North Carolina, where she pours her all energy into their art, and sells piece she can produce, both in the United States and Europe. Her strong, deceptively simple compositions sing out and captivate the viewer, With her highly developed mastery of line she distills the rhythm of life, and this is why her twin themes of music and the figure relate so strongly to us all.
